Back in black
Say hello to the new C63 AMG Coupe Black Series, the latest car to be stripped down and pumped up in the darkest corner of Affalterbach.
So what is it? Well, it is the fourth AMG car after the CLK63 Black Series, SLK55 Black Series and SL65 Black Series, taking the reins from the legendary CLK DTM. It is a more hardcore C63 that has knicked a couple of bits from its old siblings, the E63 and SLS.
Under the hood is the M156 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 which has been boosted from the standard 451bhp to either 480bhp or, if you spec the Performance Pack, 510bhp.
The E63 has kindly donated its 79mm wider rear axle and 360mm front and 390mm rear brakes – making a 30mm increase all-round. But that is not all as 255/35 ZR19 front and 285/30 ZR19 rear tyres from the E63 wrap around new 19-inch lightweight forged alloy wheels.
That is not the only hand-me-down activity as the SLS has got involved giving the Coupe Black Series an oil cooler with a 50-percent larger surface than the standard car. Also, like the SLS, the Black Series gets forged pistons and connecting rods, plus a harder and lighter weight crankshaft. Put simply, it means business.
Inside weight has been saved by chucking out the rear seats (which can be put back in if you want) and adding a set of lightweight bucket seats.
For the first time there are possible optional packages for people who really want to turn it up to 11. Optional packages include a track package which brings an optional carbon rear wing, semi-slick Michelin Cup tyres and active cooling for the rear differential. There is also the possibility of a rollcage and aerodynamic package, but nothing has been confirmed and prices are still being determined.
Both left- and right-hand drive models will be available with no cap on production. We should start to see the latest Black Series in January 2012 for around £100,000.
