The future isn’t orange, it is Lumilectric Mango

Tesla have been the go to guys for electric sports cars for a long time now, but it takes two to tango and Mercedes wants to be Tesla’s dance partner.

This is the SLS E-Cell, Mercedes first electric sports car. It is propelled by a quartet of electric motors which give it the equivalent of 526 horsepower and 649 pound-feet of torque. More importantly it is finished in an electric shocking yellow paintwork or more specifically ‘AMG Lumilectric Mango’.

Mercedes ambassador and all round F1 block head and good guy David Coultard samples the E-Cell in the video below. Being a purist he has never driven an electric car because he is too busy partying like it is 1969 and spraying his ultra tight white jeans on to his legs. However he is pleasantly surprised by a car which looks the same as the normal V8 SLS but makes no noise but can still accelerate to 60 Mph in four seconds.

What will help Mercedes more than Tesla is that they are not Silicon Valley geeks who decided to set up a car company. Mercedes is one of the worlds biggest car companies which has a true history going back decades. If Mercedes embraces electric technology in a car which looks identical to a ‘normal’ sports car with a combustion engine it will be easier for the demanding public to convert. Well that is what I think, but you can just watch the video and decide for yourself.

P.S Look how Mercedes have cut out the answer to the question when David asks how long the car takes to charge. That is because Mercedes doesn’t want to admit it takes bloody ages.
